What’s better than waking up on a Saturday or Sunday morning and considering the endless possibilities before you for a leisurely weekend brunch? I’m of the mindset that life is far too short to consume mediocre food and, after living in LA for a few years now, I’ve narrowed down a handful of brunch spots that never disappoint. Below I’ve listed three that are currently at the top of my list.
- Republique – there’s a reason the line begins early and gets long fast at this popular La Brea eatery with a vast menu serving everything from pastries made in house to traditional brunch fare to the more unconventional yet highly satisfying dishes that leave you wondering how in the world someone thought of that. Case in point? The Kimchi fried rice served with a soft poached egg- just try it and you’ll be hooked like we are. Other personal favorites include the Lobster Omelette, Shrimp & Grits and the Smoked Salmon Latke. If you’re more into sweets at brunch, the French Toast is decadent, delicious and perfect for sharing.
- Courage Bagels – another spot with a justified cult following and insanely long line, but worth the hype (and the wait) in every way. Try the Hand Sliced Smoked Salmon, Wild Alaskan Salmon Roe or Seasonal Whitefish Salad on a Burnt Everything Bagel…or, if veggie is more your speed, try the Run it Through the Garden or Cream Cheese & Tomato on a Salted Sesame Bagel. Finally, you can’t go wrong taking a few bagels to-go, served alongside a healthy portion of the local grass fed butter…just yum.
- Gjelina – a longtime favorite for lunch and dinner on Abbot Kinney in Venice, my husband and I recently ventured out to try the Sunday brunch and we were instantly hooked. A brunch menu marked by quality ingredients, creative dishes and a world class wine list, it delivers everything you want from brunch and more. Start with the Labneh on Toast and choose from any of their brunch entree items; my personal favorite is the Poached Egg with Oaxacan Grits but we also loved the Duck Hash with Crispy Egg or any of the soft scrambles. For something sweet, order the Nine Grain or Lemon Buckwheat Ricotta Pancakes for the perfect ending to a perfect meal.
I hope you enjoy these recommendations as much as I do. Drop me a line and let me know your favorites spots…and stay tuned for part two of Where to Brunch in LA, coming soon!
